Leo J Vander Lans Water Treatment Facility
Project Description: This project was a Aquifer Storage and Recover (ASR) injection well with 4 different operating modes specified by the municipality. The first mode was backwash, which takes water out of the aquifer and to waste. This was used to remove the particulates out of the well. The second mode was injection where the surplus treated wastewater was injected into the aquifer. The third mode was injection plus power generation behind the meter. This was done by spinning the submersible pump in reverse (via the energy differential of the head of water), which then electrically excited the DC bus of a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). There was a tap off of the DC bus which then fed into a three phase inverter which resulted in power for behind the meter. The fourth and final mode was Radial Injection Surge Development which included a variable number of injection followed by backwash cycles. This aimed at increasing the specific capacity and transmissivity of the aquifer.
